At the clinic, the man is given a private room with various magazines, videos, and pictures to help stimulate him. After the sample is give, it is frozen and quarantined. It is then used in artificial insemination.
There are lists and catalogues that provide basic information about the donor. This information usually includes race, height, weight, eye color, and blood type. Some of this information is available over the internet, but sometimes it is only given when someone applies at a sperm back for treatment. There may also be other information available such as if they have produced children, GPA, ACT score, hair color, and various other things. Babies produced from sperm donations are less likely to have a birth defect because the donors are screened for good quality semen.
Sperm agencies can be used as an alternative. This is usually done via the internet. The donors go through the same kind of checks as the donors at a clinic. However, the sperm is provided to the woman fresh rather than frozen. The woman says when she needs the sperm, the donor is notified and he provides the sperm on the appropriate day. The woman performs her own insemination at home. Pregnancy rates may be higher because fresh sperm is used, however, since the sperm is not quarantined it may have risks that a bank does not have.
Private donors are usually friends of the mother-to-be or found in advertising. There are websites that have links to such donors. Artificial insemination is usually used the sperm does not need to be frozen. Private donors are usually free and pregnancy may be higher since the sperm is not frozen. There are higher risks of disease transmission and legal issues.
